How to Make 3D Printable Models in ZBrush

Sculpting an original model is where ZBrush is at its strongest, and printing that model successfully is much easier when you design with the printer in mind from the first stroke. This guide covers how to make 3D printable models in ZBrush from scratch, focusing on the choices that keep a sculpt printable rather than just good-looking on screen. ZBrush gives you several ways to begin a model, and for printing the most convenient starting points are the ones that stay watertight as you work:

  • DynaMesh turns a primitive into freely sculptable "digital clay" that automatically stays a single, closed volume as you pull or push on its surface. You can also use it to subtract shapes from one another or to make cuts.

  • ZSpheres let you block out a figure or armature quickly, then convert it into a mesh to refine.

  • Primitives and IMM brushes are ideal when the object is built from recognizable base shapes or repeated parts, and an excellent option for combining, for example, your own KitBash elements or those downloaded from the internet.

Whichever you choose, the goal at this stage is a clean, continuous base you can add detail to without creating gaps or self-intersections that would cause problems later.

With Sculptris Pro, you can also automatically generate more subdivisions and polygons in the areas where they make sense for adding detail to the model.

Similarly, Live Boolean can be used to combine several SubTools in ZBrush, for example to subtract shapes from one another or calculate their intersections.


The biggest difference between sculpting for a render and sculpting for a print is that the printer produces a physical object with real material limits. A few habits keep your model printable:

  • Work at real-world scale early. ZBrush does not use units by default, so set your intended size with the Scale Master plugin near the start. Sculpting at the size you will print helps you judge whether details and thicknesses are realistic.

  • Match detail to the print resolution. Detail finer than your printer can reproduce is wasted effort and can even hurt the result. Resin printers resolve much finer detail than FDM printers, so scale your detail to the process you will use. In this context, Sculptris Pro is also very helpful, because it automatically adjusts the local polygon density as needed while you sculpt or add fine detail.

  • Respect minimum thickness. Thin spikes, fingers, capes or trailing elements can be too fragile to print or handle. Keep vulnerable areas thick enough, or plan to reinforce them.

  • Think about orientation and supports. You do not set supports in ZBrush, but knowing that steep overhangs will need them helps you avoid shapes that are needlessly hard to print.

  • Plan assembly for larger pieces. If the model will be printed in parts, decide early where it splits and where connection points will go.


Once the base shape reads well, you refine it. DynaMesh lets you keep remeshing at higher resolutions as the form develops, and for fine surface detail you can subdivide the mesh or project detail from a sculpt or scan. Sculptris Pro fits this stage well too, adding polygons only where you need them so intricate areas gain resolution without bloating the rest of the mesh. Because printing uses the real polygon surface rather than the smooth on-screen shading, curved areas need enough resolution to avoid looking faceted once printed. Keep the model watertight as you go. If you combine several SubTools or insert meshes, plan to merge them into a single closed volume before printing, which is covered in the next stage.


A finished sculpt is not automatically a finished print. Before exporting, the model still needs to be made fully watertight, optionally hollowed to save material, and reduced in polygon count. Those steps have their own guides:


How do I start a 3D printable model in ZBrush?

Begin with a watertight base such as a DynaMesh primitive or a ZSphere armature, set your real-world size with Scale Master, then sculpt with the print process and scale in mind.

Should I sculpt at the final print size?

It helps. Setting real-world scale early with Scale Master lets you judge whether detail and wall thickness are realistic for the printer you will use.

How much detail should I add for 3D printing?

Only as much as your printer can reproduce. Resin printers capture far finer detail than FDM printers, so match your detail level to the process to avoid wasted work.

Because details, masks and PolyPaint can also be kept on individual Layers, extra detail and information can be added to a model at any time without losing any previous modeling stages.

How do I control the visibility of details?

Using the Contrast Delta, Contrast Target and Deformation Contrast slider options, you can sharpen or deepen surface details as needed.
