Celebrating the Winners of the Oddly Satisfying Render Challenge using Cinema 4D and Redshift

The results are in! After sifting through over 100 submissions, we're excited to announce the winners of the Oddly Satisfying Render Challenge, powered by Maxon and Corridor Crew and hosted by motion designer Andy Needham.

Over the course of the competition, artists from around the world pushed their creativity, technical skills, and imagination to create animations inspired by the theme of "Oddly Satisfying". Think mesmerizing flows, perfect loops, pleasing collisions, and hypnotic simulations. Participants were challenged to produce original 5–20 second animations using Cinema 4D and Redshift, transforming everyday motions, patterns, and interactions into captivating renders.

Judges evaluated entries based on creativity, originality, technical execution, and how effectively each animation captured the uniquely primal, brain-tickling quality of being "oddly satisfying." With hundreds of impressive submissions from artists around the world, selecting the winners was no easy task, and this year’s winners achieved no small feat taking home the top prizes.

The quality of submissions was exceptional, showcasing the incredible talent within the Maxon community. From perfectly timed motion and seamless simulations to beautifully crafted materials and lighting, the entries demonstrated just how powerful creativity can be when combined with the right tools.

This year's winners were selected by an accomplished panel of artists, educators, and industry leaders from the worlds of motion design, visual effects, 3D animation, and digital art:

  • Andy Needham — Motion designer, 3D artist, and host of the Oddly Satisfying Render Challenge.

  • Wren Weichman — VFX artist, director, and member of Corridor Crew, known for technically ambitious visual effects work.

  • EJ Hassenfratz — Emmy Award-winning 3D artist, Creative Director at School of Motion, and longtime Cinema 4D educator.

  • Chris Schmidt — Cinema 4D artist, educator, developer, and creator of Rocket Lasso.

  • Jonathan Winbush — Award-winning motion designer, educator, and leader in real-time 3D workflows.

  • Nubia Navarro (Nubikini) — Art director, lettering artist, and visual storyteller known for vibrant, expressive design work.

  • Nidia Dias — Art director and designer specializing in styleframes, look development, and motion design aesthetics.

  • Andreas Wannerstedt — Acclaimed artist and art director widely recognized as a pioneer of the "oddly satisfying" 3D animation genre.

Congratulations to Grand Prize winner Howe Tom! Don't be fooled by the throwback stone age vibes in this short: Howe blew the judges away with his creativity and technical execution. This video encapsulates everything the challenge theme called for, delivering a visually compelling story with a satisfying—dare we say, romantic—ending. The entry captivated the judges with a Rube Goldberg-inspired chain reaction built using Cinema 4D's rigid body dynamics system. Through a carefully orchestrated sequence of collisions, triggers, and cause-and-effect interactions, the artist transformed a simple concept into a mesmerizing display of motion and simulation-driven storytelling.

As the Grand Prize winner, Howe receives a Dell Pro Max 18 Plus laptop, a one-year Maxon One subscription, and a School of Motion All Access subscription.

Kudos to Oscar Pettersson for earning second place! Oscar's submission mesmerized the judges with its polished execution and expertly crafted motion. The piece demonstrated a strong understanding of how animation truly dazzles the viewer's eye, showcasing technical artistry in a short that doesn't have to rely on plot or characters to hold our attention. The scene uses the power of Cinema 4D's MoGraph toolset, using Cloners and Effectors to build a mesmerizing, never-ending spiral tower.

Oscar receives a one-year Maxon One subscription and a School of Motion All Access subscription.

Finally, a round of applause for David Mellor, whose soothing, croquet-inspired work secured third place. David's animation combined distinctive textures like mossy grass, polished spheres, and weathered stone to create a highly engrossing scene. The swirling movement and ASMR-esque audio perfectly embodied the brain-tickling sense of satisfaction Oddly Satisfying strives for. David’s entry showcased the versatility of Cinema 4D's Hair Object and Fields system to create a mesmerizing swirling animation that drew viewers in from the very first frame.

David also receives a one-year Maxon One subscription and a School of Motion All Access subscription.

We'd like to thank every artist who participated in the Oddly Satisfying Render Challenge. Your creativity, passion, and technical expertise made this one of our most impressive community competitions to date. Across more than 100 submissions, artists showcased the breadth of what's possible with Cinema 4D and Redshift from procedural animation and MoGraph-driven motion graphics to dynamic simulationsnand photorealistic rendering.

The challenge also highlighted why Cinema 4D remains a go-to tool for motion designers and 3D artists worldwide. Participants leveraged its intuitive workflow, powerful procedural toolsets, integrated simulation system, and artist-friendly approach to rapidly iterate on complex ideas and transform them into polished animations. Combined with Redshift's fast, production-proven GPU rendering, artists were able to bring richly detailed materials, realistic lighting, and striking visual styles to life.

To everyone who entered: thank you for sharing your talent with the community and helping make this challenge a success. We can't wait to see what you create next.

And once again, congratulations to Howe Tom, Oscar Pettersson, and David Mellor on their well-deserved wins. Their outstanding work exemplifies the creativity, technical skill, and visual storytelling that continue to push motion design and 3D animation forward.
