Storytelling, character animation and a weird case of identity theft
Job Joris & Marieke, Joris Oprins, Netherlands

Joris Oprins from the Dutch studio Job, Joris & Marieke will present the stories behind their short films and music videos, with an emphasis on their latest short ‘A Double Life’. The work of the studio can be described as cute and funny but always centered around weird questions like, ‘What if you accidently exchange heads with your best friend?’ or ‘What if you could travel through your life by playing a vinyl record?’ or ‘What if your partner decides to become you?’. In 2015, their short film ‘A Single Life’ was nominated for the Oscar for best short animation. Their work has been screened at numerous international festivals, receiving over 70 awards. By the end of the presentation you will know exactly what an injured toe, an imaginary duckling and Waterloo by Abba have to do with the work of Job, Joris & Marieke!

Apollinarisstr. - Shading, Lighting & Rendering for VFX
Renderbaron, Marc Potocnik, Germany

The creation of photorealistic interior scenes is a challenging task that requires the artist's strong skills in shading, lighting and rendering - especially in the field of visual effects. If it’s supposed to look "like real", a deep understanding of procedural shading and effective lighting techniques for animation is required. "Apollinarisstr." is renderbaron studio's latest work and combines exactly this claim in a photorealistic scene of an old, worn out kitchen flooded with light. The project was created for Intel to benchmark the potential of the brand-new 28 core Intel Xeon W-3175 CPU on different systems. In his talk, studio owner Marc Potocnik shows convincing and surprising techniques for procedural shading and effective lighting and rendering with Cinema 4D.

Production: Getting to Done
Maxon Computer GmbH, Mauro van de Vlasakker, Germany

Finding mistakes before you manufacture is the most important part of any production whether it’s a film, TV show, or a new product. Being able to simulate the final product, fix problems, and iterate quickly saves time and money and makes for a better product at the end. The better the intermedia content is during production, the better idea everyone has of their finished result. Thanks to software and hardware advances, we’re seeing the arrival of fast ray tracing, and even real-time rendering.

In this panel of technologists and artists, Mauro will describe how these advances affect production from Maxons point of view.
