Persepolis - Visualization of an Empire

A co-production of the Hesse (German) Broadcasting company and ARTE.

The documentary, Persepolis - Visualization of an Empire resurrects this magnificant complex and the empire to which it belonged. Known for its exemplary organisation and management abilities, its citizens, even those who had been conquered, demonstrated religious and, to a certain degree, judicial tolerance. It is said that Alexander the Great showed remorse after his soldiers had set ablaze the Terraces of Persepolis in 300 B.C.

The goal of this project was to provide a vivid impression of Persepolis in its intirety, including its urban complexity and detail to viewers ranging from the general public to hobby historians and experts alike. The reconstructions were based on documented excavations conducted under the direction of E. Herzfeld, F. Krefter and E.F. Schmidt. Of particular help was the extraordinary work done by Friederich Krefter. He was the architect of the 1933 excavation and, from 1963 - 1970, was responsible for measuring the dimensions, creating reconstructive drawings and constructing two models of the terrasses of Persepolis. He brought to life the Archaemenid residences with their demensions, urban spaces and interiors.

Wolfgang Gambke: "In the course of this project, we adhered to all available information and integrated it accordingly. In instances that were a matter of interpretation, archaeologists were consulted and a fitting final decision was made after carefully weighing all options."

This virtual reconstructin gives us an impression of everyday life as it was in the Persian Empire during the sixth century B.C. In the advanced phase of this reconstruction, the viewer is taken onto the complex's terrace from which the monumental structures, palaces, public squares and private gardens can be viewed.

The creation of such a complex virtual model, including all details, is a lengthy task. Individual structures could only be added successively and the terrace filled piece by piece. Wolfgang Gambke: "What we have now is a product that will be added to piece by piece. This process can be followed on our website at www.persepolis3d.com."

CINEMA 4D's transparent architecture and dependability were convincing factors in our decision to use MAXON products for the creation of this project. The animations created for Persepolis - Visualization of an Empire were created in full HD at the Hesse Broadcast company's own computer network.
