As Long as There's Action...

A film short contest from John Woo was the inspiration for Philipp Hansert to create another film short after a long absence. By the time Philipp found out that only U.S. residents could enter the contest the idea had already been born and the first conceptual desings had been done. Nevertheless, work continued on the project.

"I always wanted to delve deeper into Sketch and Toon and simulate a cartoon look" says Hansert. And so the film was given its sketched look, beginning with a pencil sketch and finalized with a shadowed comic book look. Working with the Sketch and Toon module turned out to be an easy task. Everything was possible, from a pencil sketch look to cel shading. Even using several different cartoon shading techniques in a single scene or completely ignoring specific objects were no problem at all for Sketch and Toon.

The title effects were also created in their entirety using Sketch and Toon. Hansert adds, "Friends even asked me if I had hand-drawn the titles scenes."

In order to make the shading and the movement of the main character more realistic, Clothilde was used for the movement of the coat. "The result looked much better than would have ever been possible using a static mesh. Sketch and Toon did an especially good job on the hard shadowing of the cloth."
Furthermore, MOCCA was used to animate the face and hands.

Just before the deadline music and sound effects had to be added. Hansert looked no further than his trusted partner, Stephan Römer from Synthetic Arts, who needed only five days to give the film an original soundtrack and snappy sound effects.
In the end an idea was brought to life as a film short, and it certainly will not be the last to be created using CINEMA 4D.
