Football-playing newspapers?

The Daily Mirror does it! This is a job for CINEMA 4D, or have you ever seen newspapers playing football in reality?

"I spent a few days closely observing the movement of free-range newspapers to inspire the creation of their finely-crafted movement. Was it worth it? We think so.", claims David Haughey, 3D-Artist on this project.

3D modeling, texturing and animation were done in CINEMA 4D, while the character models were textured using BodyPaint 3D and Photoshop. The papers were set up with basic deformers to execute the animation. "I had set up a skeletal rig, but found that I was getting fairly similar results with the deformers, plus the significant lack of limbs on newspapers made the bones rig fairly redundant", David said. "I do like the F-Curve manager and Timeline in C4D - simple and effective. I also think the renderer has made a big leap since the last version. Some of the scenes required elements to be rendered to separate channels for compositing in After Effects. Given that I had only been using C4D for a few months prior to this project, the transition and learning curve were fairly gentle."

The papers are also being used in high resolution prints for adshells and billboards.

Streetmonkey:
"CINEMA 4D proved to be a very efficient and flexible set of tools which allowed us to work creatively, yet with the speed required in the advertising industry. We are very happy with the overall look and pleased that all the hard work has been well worth it".
