Generation - A short film by David Downes

Generation is an experimental animated film based on a short poem.

Originally commissioned to be part of the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts in 2004, it was David Downes' first animated film made in CINEMA 4D.

„I 'm a composer who became interested in animation as an extention of my work in music. CINEMA 4D struck me as unique amongst the 3d software packages in that it was the only one with interesting capabilities for quickly rendering not only animated image but animated sound. I immediately saw a lot of potential for someone like myself who approaches visual work equally from the perspective of soundscape and music."

The production of Generation included a lot of different types of 3D work including character boning and rigging, starkly lit landscape environments, and detailed modelling and texturing. David decided to make the film as photorealistic as he could manage and was more than happy with the results.

Generation was produced slowly over a long period of time and premiered at the NZ International Arts Festival in 2004. It has subsequently been screend at several international film festivals and has received an award for best original soundtrack at Cinanima 04 in Portugal. The film is currently being distributed by Interfilm distribution.
