CINEMA 4D Designer Cappuccino Machines by Jay Dubin

"I just picked the darn thing up [CINEMA 4D], never even read the manual, and just started playing with the thing."

When Jay Dubin first began dabbling in three dimensions, fewer than a handful of high-end commercial 3D software products graced a market still in its infancy, and these pricey offerings only were affordable for sizeable corporations.

"I really got involved with 3D in 1996. I was directing the show [Beakmans World] and we had a lot-tons and tons-of special effects. And I wasn't so happy with some of the effects I was seeing, so I started to play around with doing some of my own effects-with Adobe After Effects and, at the time, with Strata [StudioPro] and Infini-D."

Dubin's experimentation with CINEMA 4D eventually led to his adoption of the popular software as he began garnering 3D jobs for pay. "I just picked the damn thing up [CINEMA 4D], never even read the manual, and just started playing with the thing." Dubin says, lauding the programs ease of use.

After a few years of becoming intimate with CINEMA 4D's wares, he became aquainted with a coffee-making company called "FrancisFrancis!" by pure chance.

He saw the company's machine, the X1, in stores but thought it too pricey to purchase. He did, however, like the design of the machine, so he began work on a 3D model of it in CINEMA 4D. A friend commented on the life-likeness and suggested that he contact the company, that maybe they'd give him a machine in exchange for the model. Dubin ignored the suggestion at the time.

But a surprise meeting cancellation left him with some extra time.

"So, I'm sitting there with nothing to so. So, I say, hey, what the hell? Let me try that.'"

The following call landed him a 4 month job with the company, creating and animating a sequence to be used as a visual manual so users of all languages can easily learn how to use the machine without having to go through a manual. Besides, no one ever reads the manual anyway.
