The Spy Who Loved 4D!

„Spy of Oranje“ - An explosive movie for the big screen realized in CINEMA 4D.

PLANET X FX, a young studio in the Dutch VFX-Scene, created stunning big-screen visual effects for the movie „Spy of Oranje“. With CINEMA 4D and its modules, eight people (five of them 3D artists) managed to create 428 visual effect shots in only seven months.

„Spion van Oranje“ as a James Bond spoof tells the tale of Bruno (Paul de Leeuw), the terrorist twin brother of clumsy fashion designer Francois van Vliet (Paul de Leeuw). Bruno is plotting the destruction of the Netherlands and Francois is the only person who can save the day. On his mission he is assisted by secret agents Mustafa (Najib Amhali) and Lena (Jennifer Hoffman).

With almost 500 visual effect shots, „Spion van Oranje“ is the most spectacular visual effects motion picture produced in the Netherlands to date. The eight-member crew of young visual effects studio PLANET X FX put seven months of effort into this movie to convincingly realize the adventurous antics of Francois and Bruno. The most spectacular piece of visual effects in this movie takes place at the Dam Square Palace in Amsterdam, which is blown up early on in the story. Especially for this purpose PLANET X FX created a true-to-life computer model of the monument. This scene, lasting a mere twenty seconds on the silver screen, is the result of months of research and post production. In all, visual effect shots make up over twenty minutes of the total movie - a first in Dutch cinema!

Being a James Bond spoof, this movie involved a lot of over-the-top action sequences and impossible scenes, which were all realized with CINEMA 4D and the modules Advanced Render, MoGraph, MOCCA, Thinking Particles, NET Render and Sketch and Toon. But also C.O.F.F.E.E., XPresso and the import/export function from CINEMA 4D to Adobe’s After Effects were essential for reaching all goals in a given timeframe.

„We spent several years working on short films, music videos and commercials before we made our motion picture debut with „De Scheepsjongens van Bontekoe“ in 2007. With the work on ‘Spion van Oranje’ a new step has been taken in the application of visual effects in Dutch motion pictures.“
