Have you ever held ‘courage’, ‘curiosity’, ‘trust’ or ‘dilemma’ in the palm of your hand?
In 2004 Roland Judex developed a synthetic language with which human emotions can be easily interpreted and discussed. Roland claims: “Emotions have clearly defined functions. The shapes are the logical subsequence of a special mechanism between body and soul. Without having seen the shapes this is difficult to imagine and one tends to think of colorful, psychedelic elements with which such a topic is visualized. However, the contrary is true: The pictograms are inconspicuous and appear as simple, minimalistic and three-dimensional shapes. But the wow effect comes very quickly because the differences and comparability of the shapes really do make sense. The easy-to-interpret models can be understood and used intuitively by children. The main focus of these works lies in their therapeutic and didactic uses.
These shapes are also fun and entertaining just as they are. After all, their purpose is to help people to be able to talk about their feelings. In order to make this generally complex topic easy to understand, Roland also makes the shapes available as sets, each consisting of 15 elements with a height of 18 cm and conveniently packed in a carrying case. In all there are three sets for three different age groups: for 12-year-olds and younger; for 12 to 17-year-olds; 18 years and older. This ensures that all age groups ranging from early child rearing to adult education and personality development are covered.
The Frankfurt Dialog Museum (Frankfurt, Germany) will be displaying Roland Judex’ work through mid 2009. With the title “Touch Your Emotions”, 37 small sculptures will be available for viewing and 12 hand models will be available for the haptic experience. The museum has been active for over twenty years in over 100 countries and is specialized in the sensitization and activation of interpersonal dialog. Visitors are lead by a blind guide and in complete darkness through the installation. In one room are the 12 hand models, which can be touched and probed by and expected 70,000 visitors. Due to the high mechanical and hygienic demands this places on the models as well as their minimal amount of detail, the decision was made to produce them using the Laser Sintern prototyping method.
Roland Judex has been working as a visual designer and design agency owner since 1989 and works with state-of-the-art digital technologies, which also puts him in the category of “digital sculptor”. His sketchbook is CINEMA 4D, his models evolve to animations or to Rapid Prototyping objects and his materials are derived from state-of-the-art modeling or architectural processes – i.e. often synthetic in nature. Roland is a specialist at visualizing basic human emotional and communicative processes. He has been dedicated to this topic for over ten years and always strives to make his concepts understandable to a broad base of visitors – a goal that he obviously achieves. According to the artist he must himself first understand how the human soul can be visualized and how it interacts with the body and psyche. Apparently there exists a far-reaching and surprisingly simple exchange of energy and information. Roland calls this “The quantum mechanics of the soul”, which he summarized and condensed in the form of a 6m x 3m painting titled “Conciousness & more…” The “Feelings in 3D” are so effective because there are logical and differentiated functions between various emotions that have their origin in these processes. And exactly these processes are immortalized in Roland’s shapes. He says, self-assured, “I really look forward to the visitors’ reactions to the shapes because this is an important indication that I have in fact understood a process. To sum it up: “Emotions follow function”. Roland Judex is sponsored by Rapid Prototyping manufacturers such as Stratasys, Dimension and 3D Systems as well as 3D studios like Dosch Design. Roland in turn offers his support to socially aware companies by offering special pricing, for example to those who donate their sets to kindergartens or schools. Roland also holds dissertations and offers training through partners in the fields of psychology and education.
