'Das Unkrautland' is a 3D project about a make-believe world that evolved out of a simple sketch and was inspired by the work of Tim Burton and Disney. It has now been published as a children's book and already has a large fan base.
Das Unkrautland - a tiny, quirky, make-believe land between the Finsterwald (dark forest) and the icy peaks of the Schwefelzinnen (mountains). Something strange seems to have taken place here thousands of years ago, which was not even recorded in the ancient chronicles. What really happened? Will the forest or the swamps reveal their secrets someday? Do the answers to all of our questions lie at the bottom of the deep sea or right under our noses in the cellar of an old ruin?
Now you know the basic story of what the mysterious make-believe trilogy 'Unkrautland' is all about.
Its real-world beginnings, however, were more coincidental than mysterious. It all started out as a simple sketch, a simple modeling project that Stefan Seitz (at the time a furniture design engineer) wanted to use to improve his CAD skills. The positive response to his designs and the encouragement he received led him to continually refine this make-believe world and ultimately present it online. The subsequent positive response that his work received online made it clear to Stefan that his ideas had a lot of potential and it eventually evolved into a successful book for young readers.
"CINEMA 4D was used from the very beginning for the creation of this animated story. With CINEMA 4D any 3D modeling technique can be used to create precise objects. This was the only way in which models that were created a decade ago could still be modified and updated using the current software version. Every object that was created for Unkrautland is self-contained and contain no overlapping or penetrating surfaces."
Stefan Seitz
Those who visited the Web site wanted to know more about the mystery surrounding the locations and the main characters. Thus, a film short was created - 3.5 minutes long and created entirely in CINEMA 4D. A short time later the children's book was published, part II of which was presented at the 2009 Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany. It goes without saying that Stefan also used CINEMA 4D to create the book's cover:
"All modifications that had to be made in the course of this project were easily completed in CINEMA 4D from the flickering of a flame to pages turning in a book or the bubbling of the witches' brew. All of which was done in CINEMA 4D, without using any additional software."
