Luxury App – a Ghost for iPhones

Effekt Etage studios rounds off the family of Rolls-Royce configurators with its app for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Berlin, Germany, based Effekt Etage studios was given the job of porting its flash-based online configurator for the Rolls-Royce Ghost to the IPhone so this unique brand could be presented on Apple’s mobile phone and iPod Touch. Using CINEMA 4D, it took only four weeks for Effekt Etage to create realistic depictions of the vehicle, despite the numerous restrictions the smartphone offered.

To ensure a seamless display on older iPhone models as well, the maximum polygon limit was set to approx. 1500. Even though the 3D scenes created for the configurator contained about 3000 polygons, the challenge lay in achieving accurate contours and a smooth silhouette with this limited number of polygons. The model had to look convincing even when viewed up close when the viewer zoomed in to the vehicle.

First, a hi-res model that was made available to the studio was imported into CINEMA 4D via Autodesk’s Maya to serve as a reference for the new Rolls-Royce Ghost’s low-res model. Details that could not be modeled were added in Maya using textures.

Finally, the app was completed using Unity.
