Fashion Design with CINEMA 4D

"The concept of combining superb design with 3D tools could and should be the future of fashion design"

Jana Rot, a fashion and textile design graduate, was born in Kranj, Slovenia. She started her fashion design career in 1999 and has since then been involved in various exhibitions, fashion shows and international fashion and industrial design competitions. During her studies at the University of Ljubljana, department of fashion and textile design, she was active in researching new and creative presentations and new thinking regarding fashion and textile design.

She graduated in 2005 under the mentoring of Marjeta Godler. After graduation, Jana continued to pursue her research in 3D graphics as a tool for fashion creation and realistic presentation of designs. "The concept of combining superb design with 3D tools could and should be the future of fashion design" she says.

About the project and CINEMA 4D

"The idea behind my diploma was to create and research something that was new and was connected with the possible future paths of fashion industry. In addition, I wanted to show how a classical approach to fashion design can be combined with high tech CG", says Jana Rot.
At her University, no one had ever tried to create clothes with 3D software, so she decided this would be the way to go.

"I have researched the software market, looking for the most appropriate one, but I found out that off-the-shelf fashion CAD/3D software is extremely clumsy and limits the creativity of the designer. That was when I started looking at real, CG proven 3D software, looking at the most popular and finally selecting CINEMA 4D for its BodyPaint 3D module and fantastic high-end modeling tools, combined with a stable and fast rendering engine."

The creative idea behind the fashion designs was inspired by Papaver Rhoeas, also known as "poppy". Being a classically-educated fashion and textile designer, she started with freehand sketches, choosing the appropriate colors, materials, accessories and - the most important - the style of fashion itself. After the concept was finished, Jana began exploring CINEMA 4D's workflow, interface and tools.

"I was amazed at the number of new design ideas that came out of just using CINEMA 4D! I discovered new problems and even better, new design solutions. After 6 months of learning modeling tools, theory behind materials and BodyPaint 3D, I began modeling my own clothes and accessories. It took me another six months to create the whole collection in extremely high detail, with high-resolution textures. Luckily, CINEMA 4D is an extremely stable piece of software so I was able to focus on the design instead of focusing on finding solutions to software bugs and crashes. CINEMA 4D it works fantastic on a PC and Mac!"

The next step for Jana will be to show fashion designers that 3D software, specially CINEMA 4D, equipped with BodyPaint 3D and Clothlide, can be a perfect solution for presenting and visualizing designs, simulating psychical attributes of clothing using Clothlide, and for a better understanding of materials and light. "Architects use 3D software, industrial designers use it, why not fashion and textile designers?"

"One thing I would pinpoint at in conclusion: CINEMA 4D has, in my opinion, the best web community support of any 3D application. I could have never finished the project on time without the help of the people in those forums - for free! Thank you all!"
